Biophilic Instrument Pavilion (BIP)

Immersive sound and light installation, 2024
Design Village, San Luis Obispo, CA

This project is a collaboration between faculty Julie Herndon and Thomas Fowler with students Joseph Galicinao, Eddie Sanchez-Pascua, Anita Shanbhogue, Drew Thomas, and Sloan Woodward. We installed a portable, flat-packable structure called the Centering Center in Poly Canyon, San Luis Obispo, and worked together to create site-responsive electronic instruments and light installations activated by the canyon. The project is documented in photos, video, and printed publication below, as well as discussed in our article in Organised Sound, β€œThe Biophilic Instrument Pavilion: Spatialisation across disciplines.” The project was also awarded by the Society of Registered Architects with the 2025 California Design Award.
